The
stem that I have choosen to mount on my new Fuel 100 is the
Ultrastem from Extralite. The aesthetic impact of this ultralight
component is remarkable, for the shape and for the dimensions.
The
Ultrastem is built without any welding and is worked CNC that makes
it like a sculpture. The body, with an inclination of + or - 4°, is
oversized (40 millimeter of diameter) and, although the weight, seems to be more overdimensioned and stiff respect to the average of
the other stems.
The closing to the fork is assured by two
stainless steel bolts (also them worked CNC), situated in front of the same
steerer. Such position avoids, in a clever way, prominence and edges towards the biker, so in the eventuality
of a typical "empty stroke" the knee avoids to hit against this part. The closing of the
handlebar previews 4 bolts for a better distribution of the strains and one greater
rigidity. Both clamp and cover of the closing of the handlebar have
endured a showy "diet" by the work of the cutters and have elegant windows in the
centers of them.
The
bolts are determined such as to tight with reliability, you don't need
to apply an excessive torque loading (is sufficient to use your
brain), in any case before proceeding to the assembly, have a look to
the values indicate in the handbook to avoid disagreeable
disadvantages.
Concerning
the weight, characteristic that really
differentiates this part from the others available in the market,
Extralite claims the incredible value of 108 grams for the measure
110 millimeter. As you can see from the photo, to the verification of
my electronic scale, the 100 mm Ultrastem by Extralite marked 104
grams, therefore confirming to be the lighter stem on the market!
